We Can Xalant. Nomadic architecture and self-construction Laboratory

Workshop by a77 and Pau Faus
[july 2009]

This project  posed, first, to reinterpret the old architecture of the artist Tadashi Kawamata -placed in the courtyard of Can Xalant and known as the "Xiringuito Mataró"- and, secondly, to develop a mobile unit as an extension to the center towards public space. It's a collective construction project, formed from a network of institutions and individuals representatives of the immediate environment of Can Xalant.

DISRUPTION

Workshop by the artist Rirkrit Tiravanija and the curator Martí Peran
A proposal by the artist Josep-Maria Martín

[april 2009]

Organized by Pole Art Action, HEAD, Haute École d’Art et de Desing Geneve, HEART Perpignan and Can Xalant.

The workshop was considered as a platform for meeting and exchange with art students from different cities (Geneva, Perpignan, Montpellier and Barcelona). The starting point was the irruption by the group in the specific area of Can Xalant in order to remain in the center for a week to produce a work that was presented publicly the last day.
The workshop gravitated on the idea of creating a common space collectively, with the necessary negotiations to be allowed to agree on ways of being together.

The starting point was an event production collective of experimental and productive type. To build a site and designing ways for its saturation. The aim was that the event reverberated in multiple directions through the plurality of action centers: self-organization, occupation of the space, definition of immediate objectives, process documentation and public presentation.

Alternative Defeats. Now(/)Here-Mataró
Workshop directed by artist Rogelio López Cuenca
http://www.malagana.com

[October 2008]

Now(/)Here - Mataró is a critical analysis of the different methodologies used in various art projects in public areas as a framework for a work which could be used in the city of Mataró as a specific reference point: thus one could draw a map of the otherness, other places, other stories on the back of its event panels and its heroes and monuments.

Objects to forget. Welcome to Guantánamo
Workshop directed by artist Alicia Framis.

[June 2008]

The Guantánamo prison will probably be turned into a museum! This statement is the basis of Alicia Framis’ project Welcome to Guantánamo Museum. There is an almost excessive trend to make museums out of everything without any discerning logic, as occurred with the concentration camps such as Auschwitz or prisons such as Alcatraz where tourist souvenirs and postcards may be created from the memories of horror. But perhaps these "memorials" must exist, since oblivion and amnesia might even be worse than domesticating things. Starting from this thought the artist presented a workshop to work on the idea of objects "to forget" in which over four days several objects were made (souvenirs) which encouraged thought and reflected the current reality of Guantánamo on what, according to Alícia Framis, could be its future: a museum. Some of the results of the workshop were exhibited in Alicia Framis’ exhibition at Centre d'Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona which opened in July 2008.

DUPP, which in Catalan stands for From a Pedagogical Pragmatism, is the name given to the pedagogical projects which artist René Francisco began to create in 1990, at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana (ISA) as an alternative to the teaching programmes at that time. With no pre-established programme, no class schedules, no classroom or particular place, and after breaking down the barriers between pupil and teacher came a format of work based on action, thought and dialogue starting from experiences in groups focused on public places and social interaction.

The Aesthetics of Resistance

[June 2006]

Workshop by the Chilean artist

This intensive 12 hour workshop explored methods through which artistic practice can approach contemporary realities in new and creative ways. They explored new strategies of presentation and re-presentation in the hope of creating new models of public interventions and resistance.

kofiq. scmute
Marcos Bernabé Serrano

In the early 20th century the Futurists proclaimed the birth of a new art, "the art of noise", as a natural evolution of contemporary musical language. According to Russolo, instruments could be replaced by machines.

scmute is the alter ego of Marcos Bernabé, trained as a software developer and self-taught as a sound artist influenced by contemporary musicians such as Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage or Cur tis Roads. His current work is focused on the development of a software that breaks the sound in grains and reorder it by new sound organization model.

kofiq is a contemporary sound work between concrete music, microsounds and computer music. The first cut - kofiq - takes sounds
from sources as diverse as prepared instruments or field recordings taken on the outside of Can Xalant Creation Center. An stochastic process takes fractions of such recordings and arrange it in series or clouds of sounds. The two cuts following - eora and zyo - take the first cut as raw material and using a completely independent process break it down into parts that are mixed to form a new work.
The names of the various cuts have been decided by a system that generates words by concatenation of random letters.

The work has been produced in the Centre for Creation and Contemporary Thought Can Xalant from Mataró.

kofiq can be downloaded freely from web page of the tecnonucleo.org

Grants for production and exhibitions: Nivell Zero exhibition Hall in the Fundació Suñol and Can Xalant
Can Xalant and the Nivell Zero Exhibition hall at Fundació Suñol in Barcelona together prepared a competition to provide a grant to produce and exhibit a video project. The grant was awarded to the project Goggle Earth (els ulls arran de terra), a video-installation by Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campo. The project consisted of a series of portraits and films of places which Google Earth hides from us (military areas, training camps, government buildings, natural parks where speculators build illegal blocks of houses, nudist beaches...), where they went to gather information on the reality to then compare it with the false view we may obtain from our computers. This project will compare the hyperrealist and allegedly objective view of Google Earth with a real (and also subjective) view of our pictures from ground level.
The video-installation will be exhibited in the Nivell Zero Hall at Fundació Suñol in 2009.
